If there are never enough hours in the day for you, you’ll find this interesting… and motivating.
You see... lately I’ve been lucky enough to observe up close and personal how top level marketers work. How many hours they work, what do they work on, what they never do… things like that.
Let’s start at the beginning.
First of all, how many hours per day do you think they spend working?
Most people think big success requires 12 to 16 hour days for years. On the other end of the spectrum, you have people who seem to think 60-90 minutes per day is enough.
You can do it one way or another, or anywhere in between, but one of those is much better no matter how you look at it. And it’s the 60-90 minutes/day approach.
Interesting, right? … And sounds way too good to be true.
If you’ve been trying to build a business online, you know that there’s just no way you can do everything you need to do to get it off the ground in just 60 to 90 minutes per day.
Yet, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars in sales have been made by these marketers.
First of all, the only way you can pull this off is when you focus. And I don’t mean somewhat - as in you maybe turn off the TV in the background and put your phone away.
For 60 to 90 minutes, you focus like a monk.
Meaning you get in the state of flow and work on what you need to do without giving up for a single second to check social networks, or news, or whatnot.
Put on noise cancelling earphones if you must. Close the door to the room you work in. Make a deal with your family if you’re home and they’re home with you that they can’t - unless the house is on fire - disturb you. Let me warn you...
in the beginning, you’ll find it insanely hard.
Yet, you’ll also accomplish a lot.
Here’s the second part… which is probably even more important.
What you focus on during these sprints is crucial.
For every individual - you, me, Elon Musk and everyone else - there’s one or maybe two tasks that we can perform that will really make a difference in our businesses.
For some, it will be writing. For others, it will be calling potential leads. For others yet, it will be emailing potential partners. The most important thing is that, if performed with sufficient focus, this task will move the needle in your business in the direction you want.
Now, just to be clear.
This doesn’t mean that you only do this one thing right now.
That’s not realistic at the beginning stages of a business where we have to wear many hats. Instead, use your focused sprints for the one thing you alone can do in your business… and take care of the rest of the stuff here and there. Like, you can register a new domain if that’s what you need while you wait for your dentist’s appointment… you don’t need to spend a second of your focused time on that.
Now here’s one final thought.
We should stop glorifying overwork.
When push comes to shove, we actually only can do about 2-3 hours of “knowledge” work per day anyway. So even people who boast long hours… probably are just taking way too long to do something because of all the distractions, or for the most part are taking care of menial tasks.
So try it this way. You’ll probably find moving closer to your goals much easier and faster by working less.
